Where To Get Blonde Highlights In Hong Kong (that won’t cost a fortune!)

July 27, 2016

After moving here about four years ago, I spent countless hours researching where to get blonde highlights in Hong Kong and interrogating other fair-haired friends on where they got their hair done. I quickly learned that being a blonde in Hong Kong is not an easy or cheap affair: most local hair salons are inexperienced with blonde coloring and the higher-end “western” hair salons will end up costing you a small fortune. Thankfully, I’m about to save you the trouble and expense of  figuring out what hair salon to go to in Hong Kong to get your dose of blonde. I have two personal hair salon favourites that will leave you with beautiful, natural blonde highlights and that won’t burn a hole in your wallet (can I get an amen?!).

1. The Upper Room

I went to Ivy at The Upper Room for the first 2 or so years I was in Hong Kong because a) it was recommended by a colleague, b) Ivy was known to specialize in blonde coloring, and c) the price of highlights was significantly cheaper than other western salons (Toni & Guy, Private i Salon, Hollywood Hair, Jean Louis David, Sozo Hair Design, and the like; all of whom basically rob you because you’re blonde).

Ivy runs The Upper Room solo, so you know that when you make an appointment everything – color, shampoo, cut, and blow dry – will be done by her. She was trained in England and worked there for 12 years before moving back to Hong Kong to open The Upper Room. In the two years I had my hair done by Ivy, I was never once disappointed and I would highly recommend her.

Price:
Half-head of highlights – from HK$1095
Add a cut to any chemical treatment – HK$395

2. Tommy Hair Design

After moving from the east of Hong Kong Island to the west, I wanted a hair salon that was equally as good as The Upper Room, but just a little closer to me (I’m lazy, alright!). I had read online and heard through a friend about Tommy Hair Design – a local hair salon, save for the fact that one stylist, Edmund, is known for his expertise at blonde highlights.

Edmund was absolutely fantastic – he listened to what I wanted and added his own expertise as well, and there were a handful of other expats coming in and out, which was a testament to the quality of service. Tommy Hair Design was a bit cheaper than The Upper Room and I practically got the same results, so for the last two years I’ve been getting my hair done by Edmund and would also highly recommend him.

Price:
Half-head highlights + haircut – HK$900

*Update as of April 2018 – I went to get a half head of highlights and a cut and it came to HK$1200. I went in on a weekend and the service was a bit chaotic (had a few different stylists working on my hair, but Edmund and I chose the color, approved the highlights, and cut and styled my hair), but I still think they did a great job!

Getting Blonde Highlights in Hong Kong: Before & After Photos

blonde highlights hong kong - before

BEFORE highlights

blonde highlights hong kong - after

AFTER highlights

First of all, excuse the absolutely dreadful quality of the above photos – apparently taking selfies without your actual face in them was a bit more challenging than I had expected. Moving on, the first photo is about 6 months since I last got my hair highlighted, so the roots were coming in quite a bit. The second photo is after my recent visit to Tommy Hair Design where I asked Edmund to go a little lighter, but to still make it look natural so that when it grows out, my roots don’t look too horrible (I only color my hair about twice a year). After paying HK$900 for a great set of highlights (half-head) and a cut, I left Tommy Hair Design very satisfied!

Do any of you blonde babes in Hong Kong have a favourite hair salon? If so, please share the details below!

    This is soooo useful!
Lisa of Inception on Hollywood Road is also great (but more pricey). She knows how to deal with CURLY hair especially well, plus colour, so it was money well spent (I paid $2,000 for half head highlights, cut and blow dry for long hair).

I may try Edmund some time then

      Hey Tessa,
So glad you found it useful! Wish I had come across something like this when I first moved to HK! 😛
Can’t say I’ve heard of Inception, but if you find someone that can deal with hair that’s a bit different than the norm here, that’s a bonus!
You should def give him a try and see! Unless your hair is ringlets, I’m sure it’ll be fine!

That’s still So expensive. In central London I pay £45 for half head highlights with the toning process. HK is mad!

Haha, these prices are actually cheaper than what I was paying back in Toronto!

Appalling salon. Don’t believe the hype, Edmund isn’t worth the money.

On this recommendation, I went to Edmund in July 2016 for half-head highlights. I’d had unsatisfactory highlights at Toni & Guy, so I was looking for a new stylist to fix the orange in my hair. Edmund did a satisfactory job at improving the colour at the roots but said I would have to do a couple more sessions to eliminate the orange streaks that ran the length of my (very long) hair.

I returned at the end of August to redo the roots and highlight the remaining orange streaks, but despite discussing this, Edmund only highlighted the roots and then walked away to another client.

I asked the girl if I could speak to him again but she said no as he was busy with another client. I persisted and he eventually returned. When I reminded him of the orange streaks, he became annoyed. He snapped that it would cost me more and that my hair would be dry. I explained that I understood but wished for him to colour it anyway. He reluctantly did the majority of the remaining orange sections, but after the wash, he returned to tell me that he would not do that again and he would only highlight my roots next time.

I returned again in November to have the roots redone. Previously, we’d discussed going lighter at each visit as I wanted platinum blonde, not ash blonde. At my first visit we went lighter, but my second visit was the same tone. This time he said he would just put in more ash. This time he started in a different section and put in less highlights than before. He finished in half the time he had previously taken, and then walked away.

After the wash, I could see large sections where there was no colour at the roots. He had put in less highlights and they were chunkier. I asked him why the highlights didn’t go to the roots this time and he replied, “I don’t do highlights like that, very bad for the skin.” Then I asked if next time he could go closer to the scalp and he said, “No. Please pay, goodbye.” He removed my cape, gestured to the front desk, and walked away.

In the 15 years I’ve been getting blonde highlights, this is the furthest from the root that anyone had gone.

So I emailed Ivy Sung from The Upper Room and sent her photos. She kindly fit me in a few days later and fixed my hair.

Ivy fixed the roots, treated the hair, and achieved the platinum blonde I wanted in one session. She is the best stylist I’ve ever been to. I regret listening to the recommendation and not going to her in July instead. She is meticulous, dedicated, and honest. I relayed my experience with Edmund and she was appalled. She also assured me that my hair wasn’t damaged, that despite having been bleached twice in less than a week, my hair was strong and healthy. She showed me the obvious demarcation at the back of my head where Edmund hadn’t done the highlights down to the roots, nor had he done half-head highlights. Instead, he had stopped only a inch from the crown when he should’ve continued highlights down to the ear line.

I contacted Tommy Hair to request a partial refund. They refused and said they would only fix it or give me a 50% discount the next time I visited; I will never let Edmund nor any other stylist at that salon touch my hair again.

*At my last visit with Edmund, another client (pretty Aussie lady) was there having her colour redone. She wasn’t happy with their work and said the colour they had put in the previous day was too grey and yellow in parts. You could see large sections of grey mixed with an unattractive yellow (She did not have naturally grey hair). When they were finished there was little change in the colour and she did not appear happy with the result.

Photo: Edmund (left), Ivy Sung (right). I paid $940 for half-head highlights with Edmund, $1090 with Ivy. Edmund spent 1.5 hours. Ivy spent 3+ hours.

Sorry, I tried to attach a photo but failed. It can be seen on my Google review of the salon.

      Hi Leah,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m surprised to hear that about Edmund and the salon.. I’ve never experienced anything like that when I’ve been there (have been there around 6 times over the past 3-4 years) and have only heard praise from other people in Hong Kong about Edmund, which is why I went there in the first place. Also, I tried to look up your Google review and couldn’t see any photos.

Regardless, I’m sorry that you had a bad experience.. wonder if anyone else has had a similar one? But, I am glad that you really liked Ivy’s services!

I had a similar experience with Edmund. He doesn’t listen and just does what he wants! I had to go back the next day the last two times I went to him as when I got home I saw the colour was totally uneven and then ends were orange, he only did the highlights on the top!
He walked away from me each time I asked him about the colour in the ‘consultation’… Very rude and doesn’t listen to what u want. Avoid this place!

I LOVED Tommy hair design when I first came to HK but the last time I went the roots were left around two inches from the base/not touched at all. I actually had to go back to have them redone the next day as I couldn’t tie my hair as I had massive brown patches on either side from where the roots hadn’t actually been dyed at all (they did so happily but would not dry my hair as “i would have to pay for that” – It was 7pm in January). For nearly 2,000 dollars, I expected a little better (also not sure what was up with me being charged so much each time compared to others). Spoken to some friends who also go there and they’ve complained of similar issues recently, particularly with very loose foils/missing roots so I’m not sure what’s going on there lately. But thanks so much for the recommendation of Ivy – my hair is in desperate need of some TLC now 😀😀

      Hi Jo,
Aw, no – I’m sorry to hear you had a bad experience! To be fair, I actually went there to get my hair done a few weeks ago and the service wasn’t as good as I remember. I had a few different people working on my hair, whereas before it was only Edmund. Not sure if it was because I went in on a weekend or what. They have also upped their prices – I ended up paying HK$1200 for a half head of highlights and a trim. But, I will say, I left very happy and really do love the job they did this time around!
