The saying, “you can’t judge a book by its cover” rings true to the unassuming exterior of SAAM, despite Chef Patrick creating fabulous fine dining dishes in the kitchen. Tucked away on Graham Street in Central, it’s likely you’ve passed by SAAM multiple times and didn’t think much about it. Having recently revamped the menu and concept of the restaurant, SAAM is ready to make a big splash in Hong Kong’s dining scene with well thought-out tasting menus. The newest venture, after SAAM’s successful “Back to School” menu, is a kaiseiki inspired winter tasting menu highlighting seasonal ingredients and using various methods of preparation for each course.
Hong Kong is home to a fairly large selection of Indian restaurants that offer the classics, such as chicken tikka, palak paneer, vindaloo, and so forth. With little to distinctly separate one restaurant from the other, it’s no wonder that most seem to glide under the foodie radar. Thankfully, that’s all about to change with a fresh face for Indian food: Bindaas. Serving traditional street foods and Indian tapas with a modern flare, Bindaas is a unique restaurant option for those looking for something different.
Swire is on a roll as they open yet another restaurant (after The Continental in Admiralty and Public in Taikoo) in the heart of Hong Kong Island’s Eastern business district; Quarry Bay. Mr & Mrs Fox caters to a wide audience, offering three floors with distinct dining differences. Their food has a refined simplicity to it that leaves you wanting to try every dish on the menu, and their service is some of the best we’ve had at a modern restaurant that is still able to exude a sense of casual. Needless to say, Mr & Mrs Fox gets two thumbs way up for their all-around fantastic dining experience.
The recent opening of The Pulse in Repulse Bay is yet another reason to head down to the Southside of Hong Kong Island: now, aside from soaking up the sun on the beach, you have plenty of beachside restaurant options to choose from. I was especially intrigued by Meen & Rice as a simple Chinese food lover that was looking for a bit more of a modern take on your classic cha chaan teng. Thankfully, Meen & Rice did not disappoint with its unique decor and inviting environment, and Cantonese favourites littered throughout the menu.

So, which one do you choose? What’s the best bang for your buck? Jamie’s Italian, by renowned chef Jamie Oliver, is a well-known chain of restaurants that have been rapidly popping up all over the world. From his first restaurant opening in Oxford in 2008, Jamie has expanded his dining concept of good food at affordable prices to over 30 restaurants worldwide. This is now his second restaurant in Hong Kong within the past year, showing no signs of slowing down. His new location in TST offers all the same tastes as the Causeway Bay branch, but with additional menu options and a very different atmosphere.
Whether you’re a vegetarian, vegan, or are just wanting to eat healthy for a change (which can prove to be difficult when living in Hong Kong), then you should head over to Maya Cafe Mediterranean Lifestyle on Moon Street in Wan Chai. The interior is welcoming and has outdoor seating in the back if you’re there on a not-too-hot, but not-too-cold day. The menu offers a uniquely wide selection of items that will please any palette.
