El Nido

The Sunset On Corong Corong Beach, El Nido

July 21, 2014

As amazingly wonderful as the town of El Nido is, it’s missing one thing. Because of the looming limestone cliffs to the west of the town, you are unable to see the sunset. This also means it gets dark much earlier in the day than you would probably like. Thankfully, we ended up finding a solution to our lack-of-a-beautiful-sunset problem.

I had asked our guides during our last island hopping tour where we could go to see the sunset and they mentioned heading to another beach nearby. So, one evening at around 6:00 pm, we hopped in a tricycle and took a 7 minute ride to see the sunset on Corong Corong Beach, which is located just behind the aforementioned limestone cliffs.

The tricycle driver let us out in front of a narrow, rather sketchy-looking path that led to the beach. After coming out, we were met with a small village of about 10 or 15 homes on wooden stilts. We were greeted with friendly smiles from the locals who seemed just as curious about us as we were about them.

As we walked down the beach, we came across a little bar. We clearly couldn’t resist enjoying an ice cold San Miguel as we watched the sun go down, so we ordered a beer and waited with a few other tourists who had also come to see the sunset. The views were absolutely stunning with the large islands and still boats making the sunset picturesque.

I highly recommend you spend a few hours here at the end of a day to relax on a rather vacant beach while the sun sets before you. I don’t know what it would be like during the day, but there really isn’t much on this strip, save for a few sparse guest houses. Though if desolation is what you’re looking for, this beach is perfect.
