The Viktualienmarkt (or Victuals Market for us non-German speaking folk) is a highlight in Munich for travelers and locals alike. Open year-round, the market serves as an all-purpose stop for those on the hunt for anything from fresh fruit and vegetables to flowers, and beer gardens to local cuisine. Even if you’re not looking for anything in particular, the Victuals Market in Munich is worth a quick stroll through to take in the colorful sights and delicious smells!
Located in the heart of Munich, just steps from the Old Town Hall in the Marienplatz, the Victuals Market is full of people buzzing around its 140 stalls. Though most items for sale aren’t exactly gentle on your wallet due to the “gourmet” selection, you should come to the market hungry and, at the very least, drop a few euros on a massive pickle, pretzel, and/or sausage.
If you’re looking to have a truly authentic German experience, head over to the biergarten (beer garden) before 11:00 am, and sit down at a table next to a group of locals in lederhosen and order a traditional Munich Weisswurst breakfast of boiled sausages, pretzel, and Weissbier (wheat beer). To most people that may not sound appetizing, especially for breakfast, but trust me when I say it is the perfect way to start the day!

I also love this place, but you are right, it is soooo expensive… luckily there are still a few stalls where one can grab a soup or snack for a reasonable price, and eat while watching what happens all around one. It is such a lively and fascinating place!

September 24, 2015 at 2:29 pmI’m sure it’s busier on weekends, but I was there during the week and almost all the tables at the beer garden were taken! Perhaps because it was in the summer there was a lot more people milling about.
