Sigiriya Rock VS Pidurangala Rock, Sri Lanka – which hike to choose

July 23, 2020

Before coming to Sri Lanka I had heard about Sigiriya Rock and how it was a fun hike up a massive rock with stunning views of your surroundings. However, after asking for some tips on what to see/do around the area, someone suggested I climb Pidurangala Rock instead. After a bit of research, we decided to go with Pidurangala Rock instead of Sigiriya Rock. Here’s why.

Why I decided to climb Pidurangala Rock instead of Sigiriya Rock

The view

Your view from the top of Pidurangala is much better. One of the great things about Pidurangala is once you get to the top, you can see Sigiriya Rock in the distance. If you have a good enough camera, zoom in to see people climbing up the stairs of the rock. By contrast, you really don’t see much when you get to the top of Sigiriya – it’s basically just flat trees everywhere with some mountains in the distance.

Less touristy

There really weren’t many tourists when we climbed up Pidurangala (though there were lots of local tourists since we went on a Sunday) – maybe we saw between 10-15 tourists. However, when we looked across to Sigiriya, there was a massive queue going up the stairs on the side of the rock. This is also the option many tour guides suggest to visitors. So, if you’re looking to avoid a crowd, I’d go with Pidurangala. Just don’t make the same mistake like me and avoid Sundays.

Cost

The entrance fee for foreigners to climb Pidurangala Rock was only 500LKR (US$2.50), which was much cheaper than climbing Sigiriya Rock (US$30).

Why you might want to choose Sigiriya Rock instead

Historical significance

If you’re a big history buff and want more than just a workout with some views, perhaps Sigiriya would be the better option. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has plenty of rock carvings, sculptures, gardens, and artwork as you make your way to the top.

Fitness Level

The climb up Pidurangala Rock was not easy. For me, it was difficult because there were a few spots (mainly one section midway up and another at the very top) that was a bit scary to navigate. However, since Sigiriya Rock is such a popular tourist destination, the climb up to the top involves only stairs. So, if you are travelling with young kids, the elderly, or anyone who is not that fit, I would recommend skipping Pidurangala and opting for Sigiriya instead.
