Accommodation In Amsterdam

September 1, 2014

If you’re planning a trip to Amsterdam, let me be the first to warn you about how damn expensive this city is. I’ll try to stop myself from going on a rant about how extortionate everything was in this overrated city, but I’m cheap and I love to complain, so bear with me.

Do you enjoy a coffee in the morning? Me too. What I didn’t enjoy was paying over €5.00 for a grande cappuccino at Starbucks.

I spent four nights in Amsterdam this past summer and it was probably the four most expensive days out of my entire three week Europe trip. I might be slightly exaggerating here, but you get the point. Searching for accommodation in Amsterdam proved to be quite the task; it was difficult to find a decent hotel for less than €50 a night, even outside of the city center.

After days of searching for a good deal online, we bit the bullet and booked a room at Hotel Floris for €66 a night. The hotel was located about a 15 minute walk from the life of Amsterdam and, though it was decent enough, was really not worth its price tag.

The room was long and narrow and the building it was located in didn’t actually have a check-in desk, so we had to go to Hotel Iris (one of its sister hotels just across the canal) to check-in. They close their reception at 10:00 pm and don’t open it back up until 8:00 am, which meant we had to seriously hustle to the hotel from the airport in order to make the 10:00 pm cut-off time.

Oh, and as a tip for those who are wanting to go to Amsterdam: four days is one too many to spend here (unless of course your reasons for going solely involve doing things that are legal there, but aren’t in most other places).
