Richard’s PEI: The best fish & chips and lobster rolls in PEI?

February 25, 2019

Heading to the east coast of Canada means it’s totally acceptable to eat your weight in fresh seafood. So naturally, while in Prince Edward Island, we were on the hunt for the best fish & chips and lobster roll. After a few recommendations from friends and a quick Google search, it seemed like Richard’s PEI was the place to go to get our seafood fix. The restaurant is located in Prince Edward Island National Park right by the water in a quaint wooden restaurant. Regardless of the time, you can expect a queue when you arrive, though I promise it’ll be worth the wait.

How to get to Richard’s PEI

Richard’s PEI is located right in the middle of Prince Edward Island National Park, about 25 minutes north of Charlottetown. You’ll find Richard’s just off the Gulf Shore Parkway East on Wharf Road. There’s a large parking lot and a number of little shops. Some of these are other restaurants, clearly hoping the long queue at Richard’s will bring them some business instead, as well as little tourist shacks to take people out fishing, etc.

Fish & chips and lobster rolls, oh my!

We were told the two must orders were the fish and chips and the lobster roll. I ordered the lobster roll and fries (CAD$19) and my friend ordered the fish and chips (CAD$13.50), both of which were fantastic. The lobster roll was insanely fresh and the mayonnaise-based sauce complimented the flavour of the actual lobster without overpowering it. My friend who had the fish and chips said the fish was some of the best she’s ever had. I tried a bite and it was lightly battered and fried, not greasy, and full of flavour. The fries were also fantastic – despite being absolutely stuffed, we couldn’t stop eating them.

Vibe at Richard’s PEI

The vibe here is super laidback with indoor and outdoor seating. We sat outside on the rooftop, which had some incredible views of the surrounding area. The only downside was that it was very windy which made eating a bit of a challenge. The turnaround for tables is quite quick, so don’t worry if you can’t find a table right away. By the time you get through the queue and get your food (they give you a little device that goes off when your order is ready), you’ll have found a spot to sit.
